Ad Revenue Without the Release Risk

Our Client's Backstory

Our US-based client provides monetization infrastructure for digital publishers in the programmatic advertising ecosystem. Their platform orchestrates bidding logic, optimizes inventory, and maximizes yield across a network serving more than 500 million users.

Klika has worked on their mobile SDKs since 2023. The first engagement turned a functional prototype into a production-grade monetization engine. It shipped more than 50 releases across iOS and Android with full backward compatibility.

The SDK was now stable and shipping on a predictable cadence. It was still one artifact every publisher took whole, and its public interface still made no promise it could keep.

The Challenges

As the client moved upmarket, the packaging became the constraint.

  • Publishers paid for vendors they never used: Consider a publisher selling through Google Ad Manager and bidding through Prebid, but running no Amazon auctions: they still shipped the Amazon library and everything it pulled in. That is the download size they pay for and a wider surface for dependency conflicts in their build.

  • One vendor upgrade forced a release on everyone: Moving a single advertising vendor forward meant a full SDK release that every publisher had to take, test, and ship, whether or not they used that vendor.

  • Interface changes surfaced after the store release: Nothing enforced the public API so that a method could change shape between versions; a publisher's app would still compile, and the difference appeared in production, where a fix costs a review cycle rather than a deploy.

  • Failures told publishers nothing: Ad requests returned empty values with no reason attached, so routine integration questions escalated into support tickets.

  • Two platforms meant two integration models: Publishers shipping both an Android and an iOS app met a different shape on each. That doubled integration effort and support surface.

The Solution

Klika proposed the rebuild. After two years in the codebase, our engineers knew where the vendor coupling sat and designed the split along that line for both platforms.

A vendor-free core plus opt-in adapters

One core module owns the public API, configuration, slot resolution, and orchestration, and names no advertising vendor. Three adapters each own exactly one.

One design, two platforms

Android and iOS were planned together, not ported. Both expose the same seven ad-request entry points, the same three runtime controls and the same failure model.

A public contract the build enforces

On Android, the entire public interface is committed and validated twice in the pipeline, so a change cannot reach publishers without first appearing as a reviewable diff.

Failures that explain themselves

Every fallible call now returns a named cause instead of an empty value, so a publisher's engineer diagnoses their own integration.

Distribution without credentials

Both platforms publish to the public registries their build tools already read, so credential provisioning drops out of onboarding.

The Result

The rebuild changed what the client can promise a publisher at the point of sale, and what it costs to keep that promise.

Smaller integration footprint

Publishers ship only the advertising vendors they actually run, instead of all three.

Premium UX Template for Framer
Vendor upgrades decoupled from the publisher base

An update ships as one adapter release to the publishers on that vendor, rather than a full SDK release the whole network absorbs.

Premium UX Template for Framer
Breaking changes moved from production to review

Validated across 113 regression cases with zero failures, with 9 defects found and fixed before any publisher saw the release.

Premium UX Template for Framer
Reduction in integration support load

Named failure causes let publishers self-diagnose. This replaces the ticket an unexplained empty response used to generate.

Premium UX Template for Framer
A route into game engines

Wrapping an ad SDK for Unity or Unreal has been blocked by payload size, because engine plugins cannot carry three advertising vendors a title will never use. A vendor-free core opens that channel without another rewrite.
